Paris wants to eliminate 70,000 parking spaces by 2026

This is a new blow for motorists in Paris. During a press briefing, the green deputy for transport, David Belliard, returned to a measure he had already announced and which is particularly close to his heart: the disappearance of half of the surface parking spaces in the capital by the end of 2026. Half of the surface parking spaces should disappear.

Why this desire to remove parking spaces?

The reasons given by the elected official are multiple: water flow, greening and development of the network of soft mobility... "We can no longer use 50% of the capital for cars when it represents 13% of travel. We can no longer use 50% of the capital for the car when it represents only 13% of travel. Public space is a common good that must be dedicated to uses other than the car," explains David Belliard.

One of the priorities is therefore to reinforce the quality of life in the city, by involving the inhabitants in the improvement of the urban environment in the districts, by encouraging soft mobility and a reappropriation of the public space.

How will the transformation of the vacated spaces be organized?

A consultation will be launched shortly this week with Parisians on a digital platform. This initiative will be accompanied by a citizens' convention scheduled for November 2021, made up of a panel of randomly selected citizens representative of Parisians who will be asked to give their opinions on the freed-up spaces. Workshops with various actors and experts on the subject are also planned.

What will they be replaced with?

While no parking spaces dedicated to people with disabilities will be removed, the freed-up space will be used for "new bicycle infrastructure, gardens, street furniture, public toilets, fountains, café terraces and sports facilities".
